helpful css tips.

Over the years, I have wasted a lot of time on “guessing” what would work and what would not work. Anyone just starting with CSS or looking to modify someone else’s CSS will hopefully find these tips helpful and time saving. Padding or Margin? These two attributes are often used, and more often confused. The margin attribute defines the space around an HTML element’s border. The padding attribute refers to the space within the border. Example: p.marginex { margin:20px; border:1px solid #ccc; } p.paddingex { padding:20px; border:1px solid #ccc; } This illustrates using margins. This illustrates using padding. The last week has been absolutely crazy. I had a house full of house guests from Thursday until Sunday Amy and I brought Ava to her new home on Saturday where she has a 14 year old greyhound sister as well as a beagle too Huge storms here on Sunday/Monday…so strong our front door (glass/screen) swung way open and shattered) Ookles is no longer a secret and I have tons more to do! I fought, once again, to get my SSL cert in order with Apache and mod_ssl (damn IE and the ciphers) Network Solutions had an outage this morning… Read More »

Well, I have done it again, a slight redesign to the eye, but a major overhaul on the backend. I have pretty much converted all what once were graphics into text with CSS. I have been working on this for a few weeks now and when I get a few minutes here and there, I edit it and make improvements. I still have a few pieces (like getting the blog tab to stay highlighted when it should) to put in place to complete it, but it is mostly done. Some minor logic changes and I will be set. It was… Read More »

mysql database corruption.

What got me up early Saturday and then up at 1am on Sunday? Server hardware failure…which led to some database corruption. I have never had to deal with database corruption, so I did not even know my problem was database corruption until after calling the helpful tech guys at Liquid Web. (I am not one to usually call tech support, but at 136am on a Sunday…I did not feel like spending time at mysql.com or google.com.) I first noticed something on Saturday morning, but after restoring a database table from a backup, everything was golden. I told myself…it had to… Read More »

After thinking about it for a few weeks, I have finally decided to put a link to on my blog page. I created my own map to see how many people who read my blog would actually share their locations with me. Yeah, I could find out this information by looking at my logs, but I really like Google Maps, and would like to use some of that technology. So, if you are reading this, please take a second and put yourself on the map. Rock on. After that, check out Ben’s new WP blog. Long live WP blogging! [tags]jappler.com,… Read More »

wordpress 2.0

I finally had a few minutes to download the latest Release Candidate of WordPress 2.0 yesterday and install it. Like usual, I created a full backup of my current site files and database, then installed the new version of WordPress and ran the super easy “upgrade” script. I was extrememly surprised when I did not encounter any real issues…especially since I hacked together so much with WordPress 1.5. My plugins worked and this I am able to post! I have not had a lot of time to play around with all the new features (most which are behind the scenes),… Read More »
