wordpress 2.0

I finally had a few minutes to download the latest Release Candidate of WordPress 2.0 yesterday and install it. Like usual, I created a full backup of my current site files and database, then installed the new version of WordPress and ran the super easy “upgrade” script. I was extrememly surprised when I did not encounter any real issues…especially since I hacked together so much with WordPress 1.5. My plugins worked and this I am able to post! I have not had a lot of time to play around with all the new features (most which are behind the scenes), but I look forward to checking them out soon.

I am including a screenshot of the admin area to show anyone who has not used a CMS or a blog just how easy it is to post content on a web site. If you can type and click a mouse button, you can have your own web site 😉 If you have never played with AJAX, there are lot of little AJAX goodies in this latest release!  Good job WordPress developers on the new release!

optimaztion time.

Well, it has been awhile since I have done any maintenance on jappler.com and over the last few weeks, I have noticed a bit of a slow down when the pages load. I took some time today to look at the php code, style sheets, templates, etc and have at least tracked down the problem…somewhat. My site flies with other WordPress templates, but there is something about mine that WordPress does not like. I had originally designed my template for an earlier version of WordPress and I guess it is time I update it. Please bare with my site slowness for a little while longer. My stylesheets and HTML all validate, now I just need to figure out what in my WP code is slowing everything down.

finally updated to WP 1.5.2

wordpress After being a bit nervous about updating to the newest version of WordPress because of all the customizations I made (and then did not properly document) I finally decided to bite the bullet and update. I tried the upgrade on another test site and all went well, so I am finally up to date. Document, document, document. Back up!

jappler.com: database driven (finally)!

wordpress For years I have been searching for a web site solution that would fit my needs:

  • easy to change and edit content (via any web browser)
  • integrated blog
  • integrated search
  • easy to maintain
  • database driven
  • templates
  • able to adapt to mobile technologies

I have played with many CMSes over the years, and I finally realized the power of Plone, but your average hosting company does not offer plone hosting. None of the other CMSes really appealed to me because I had to do so many customizations, and I really don’t have any membership needs, so I decided to look elsewhere for a solution. In my mind I had two options: home made CMS or to do something with my beloved WordPress install. I decided to follow Alex King and to use WordPress to drive my entire web site. I have used a number of plugins, mod_rewrite rules, and some customizations to make it all possible, but so far I am very happy with how everything turned out. I have made several changes so far to multiple pages via my web browser, I looked at my blog via my phone on the train this morning, and am still able to write my blog like I have been for the last year (almost). I had to make a few changes to some plugins to make everything work together, but I learned a lot. I also am very thankful for the documentation available which allowed me to add a lot more flexibility and features in my templates. Perhaps if there is interest, I will break down everything I did so others can do the same.

wordpress quicktags fix for safari and photo options.

After taking a look back at Moveable Type, I decided it was time to look for a new photo management plugin for WordPress. I decided to first try PhotoPress because it sounded pretty cool (thumbnails, random pictures, etc)

Since the move to WordPress 1.5, I noticed that my quicktags no longer exisited when I used Safari to write my posts, and in order to see PhotoPress in action, I needed to see them (PhotoPresss adds a button to the quicktags section). So far all of you out there using WordPress 1.5 and Safari and that have noticed that the quicktags no longer show up, found the solution.

For those of you that do not use WordPress, but are curious, quicktags are a bunch of buttons that can be used to generate html code. (ex. by selecting the “link” button you are prompted with a diablog box to insert a link like jappler.com and then WordPress will autoformat the html code for the link.)
Quicktags

spam karma plugin.

Since moving to WordPress 1.5 I have been getting tons of comment spam, but I finally have a solution. I am using the spam karma plugin. Within a few minutes of installing it I had it up and running, blocking comment spam left and right. In less than 24 hours, I have blocked 72 comment spam attempts. I have tried other plugins, and by far this plugin is my top choice. I also like the ability to see what is being blocked, and see statistics. Anyone who uses WordPress and gets comments spam, look no further, this plugin is for you!

excuse the dust, updated to WP 1.5.

I updated my installation of WordPress to 1.5, and am still working out some problems with some of the plugins that have not been updated yet. I am hoping to get everything working ASAP, but until then, you might notice a few things are a little funky (like my photos). I have also been going through my plugins and trying to add more functionality, so stay tuned!

almost there.

Well, new designs, new learning experiences. I have lots to share later about CSS and about WordPress layout, but I need a break. I still need to get my main menu from the rest of the site into the blog layout, and figure out why my top menu item is not lining but, but the end is near. I have some Mozilla/Firefox issues to deal with, but they are minor.
More later. Time to go home and play SoCom II.
