Jappler Recommends: Words With Friends

Posted by: Jennifer Zelazny | 0 Comments

I admit it – I am hooked on Words With Friends (very similar to Scrabble). One of my friends got me hooked last week and ever since I have been playing with him and some random people online. What is this? Think Scrabble with a beautiful interface, the ability to play one turn at a time at your own pace – with friends and strangers alike. Some days I will place several words. Other days – I might only have time for one or two words. Games can take a few hours or a few days. Either way – it… Read More »

Why I Use Google Docs

Posted by: Jennifer Zelazny | 0 Comments

I have an assortment of clients – all who prefer to pass documentation back and forth in a number of ways: email, spreadsheets, documents, faxed, etc. Over the last year or so I have been using Google Docs for almost all of my client interaction/checklists/etc. Using Google Docs is great for a number of reasons and if you are not using it yet for your documents – please consider giving it a shot. Why I use Google Docs (and you should too): You can create documents, spreadsheets, presentations, etc without having to buy or support any software. You can always… Read More »

My New Obsession: Ancient Aliens

Posted by: Jennifer Zelazny | 0 Comments

I have one of my TiVos set to record “TiVo Suggestions” (TiVo tracks what I like/do not like and then records other similar shows it thinks matches my interests). Awhile back I decided to go through the suggestions and to watch something new. TiVo happened to record an episode of Ancient Aliens on the History Channel. (I watch a lot of space/Universe documentaries). After watching the first episode – I instantly added it as a season pass. I have been absolutely fascinated by this show which tries to explain things (and make you think about it) like Stone Henge, the… Read More »

Finding Your Pace

Posted by: Jennifer Zelazny | 2 Comments

We all work at different paces. Some like to try and do everything really quickly so they can relax later. Others wait until the last moment and race to get things done (they find energy and excitement in the challenge to finish). Still others prefer to keep a grueling pace throughout the entire project in order to get everything plus more done. Although I have done all of the above – if nothing else – Oregon Trail taught me one thing: pace is everything. While some of these routes to the end result will work some of the times, the… Read More »

Jappler Recommends: Work/Life Balance

Posted by: Jennifer Zelazny | 0 Comments

Over the last few years I have, like most other business owners, struggled with a good work/life balance. While I do not feel like I am at an optimal balance yet – I know and I a lot closer than I once was. This can be tricky – but here are some tips that will help you achieve it. When working with clients – clearly state your business hours. I generally do this on the initial call or email as well as on my voicemail so when a client calls after midnight or tells me they are available until 11:30pm… Read More »

Old Hard Drives Laying Around? Try This…

Posted by: Jennifer Zelazny | 0 Comments

A few weeks ago I decided I needed to upgrade my Mac Mini’s internal hard drive from 200 Gig to a 500 Gig so I could finally take a stab at getting my media in one place. For under $100 – I bought a 7200rpm 2.5″ Seagate drive and had it installed in no time. After running a simple Time Machine restore from backup – my Mac Mini was set. I now could consolidate my media – but I was left with a 200 Gig drive that was going to realistically find a home in one of my card catalog… Read More »

Time to Reconnect and Disconnect

Posted by: Jennifer Zelazny | 0 Comments

A few months ago I closed my Facebook account in order to try and stop wasting so much time on my computer/iPad/iPhone looking at my friend’s and family’s daily statuses, game play activity, and other garbage that got fed to me. Since then – I have not looked back and have been enjoying more quality time actually talking to people and not reading about them. I am more and more people are doing the same thing and actually enjoying turning their phone off, not using Facebook, and not being tied down to Twitter. I commend them as it is really… Read More »

Jappler Recommends: Clean Up Your iTunes Library

Posted by: Jennifer Zelazny | 0 Comments

I recently did some file cleanup on my main Mac to tidy things up, but indadvertedly wreaked some havoc with iTunes. I had a number of songs that had the “!” for missing and no really good way to delete all of them (there were too many). After doing a few quick searches on the issue – I found my solution: Super Remove Dead Tracks. Then – to really clean up everything I wanted to remove all the duplicates so I then used Dupin which also worked like a charm. All is much more organized and cleaner now…

Jappler Recommends: Patrick Collision

The day my twins were born, my mother was on her way home from the hospital and a limo driver decided to make a right turn into my mother – who was driving my Volvo. As soon as I heard about this – I knew there was only one place I would take my car: Patrick Collision in Schaumburg, IL. They are a part of my Volvo dealer’s group – and I have always been impressed with their work and service. My car was in their hands for a week and when I picked it up today it was like… Read More »

Jappler Recommends: Trim the Fat With Facebook Status Updates

Posted by: Jennifer Zelazny | 1 Comment

I cannot tell you how bothered I am when my “news feed” is littered with all sorts of updates about zoo this, farmville that. I like to keep up to date on family friends but I really do not care about the games they are playing which I am not participating in. Fortunately – Facebook allows you to “hide” statuses from applications. If you want to hide these as well (or anyone in your newsfeed which you might not really care about) – simply hover over the status update and a “hide” link will appear. You can either block that… Read More »
