project management.

I recently finished up a web site (using WordPress as a CMS of course) for a client who besides being a client is an amazing writer. He has a best selling project management book (The Art of Project Management) and has another one coming out in the next month. If you have a few minutes, take a look at his web site and read his blog or some of his essays to learn more about design, project management, working with others, and all kinds of smart tips.

giving wp-cache a try.

I have been going back and forth for awhile about whether to cache or not to cache, and I decided to finally try it with this site. I have heard many good things about the WP-Cache plugin and got it installed today. If you notice a difference in load times over the course of the next few days/weeks, please let me know.

If you ever need to implement drop down menus and want to use clean CSS/javascript code, check out: Son of Suckerfish Dropdown menus. I have implemented these on a few web sites now for my clients and have been very happy with the results. If you are using WordPress, you can also use to dynamically generate the drop down menus. Enjoy!

wordpress documentation.

As most people know, I am a huge fan of WordPress. I get a number of potential clients that ask to help build their company or organization a web site which is easy to update without knowing any HTML. Of course - 9 out of 10 times I start talking about the benefits of WordPress. As a developer as well as someone who does not want to depend on someone else for a lot, I really like all the documentation and examples or “lessons” that are available for WordPress. When clients see all the documentation, their minds are more at ease and often feel more empowered which make me happy. If you are interested in working with WordPress or have a WordPress blog currently but are looking to do more, I recommend the following resources:

Working With WordPress - A one stop shop of information on everything from how to create a post to what user roles are to how to create a plugin.
WordPress Lessons - Basic lessons to help you get to know and feel more comfortable with WordPress
WordPress Advanced Topics - More advanced WordPress information if you want to use WordPress for … [more]

I have successfully upgraded all my personal/business web sites to WordPress 2.1. I ended up doing clean installs on all my sites (it had been awhile) and only ran into one problem with the plugin PodPress. If you are using WordPress, make sure you check out the new version!

i am back.

After a few days of not posting here, I am back. Every time the new year approaches, I begin to re-assess what I want to do for the year like most people. Last year I wanted to establish myself and my consulting business, get involved in some big projects, and learn more about WordPress. Looking back now, I ended up working on a few big projects, the most visible (as soon as it launches) is Ookles. I had the opportunity to work with some outstanding talent and I learned quite a bit about CSS, Google Maps, project management, contracts, and the art of communication. I also had a great year with my consulting company. I have helped a number of people build their personal and company web sites, and I learned quite a bit by working behind graphic designers for the first time. Thanks to Alex King, I also built quite a few custom WordPress CMS web sites, blogs, and etc which pushed me to learn more about WordPress, AJAX, and PHP. In the next coming year, I hope to improve my time management (so I can spend … [more]
