Seriously Apple - Find an iMovie Interface and Stick to It

hr
hr

Wow. How many times will Apple release a new version of iMovie and completely change the interface and how it works? I cannot tell you how many versions now I have used of iMovie that were completely different than the previous. Each time I have to either waste an hour or so to figure out how to work with my media or read the manual. Good thing I am not afraid to do both - but I feel bad for people who are not as patient as I am.

HD Finally!

hr
hr

Phew - finally after I much frustration and a crappy picture - I am making the move to HD. We wanted to get HD a year or so ago when I first bought the big HD TV, but Comcast did not offer the Big Ten Network (for all our Penn State games) and DirecTV could not get all the needed HD signals because of a few trees in our yard. This week I was determined to get HD so it was a matter of either getting some trees trimmed or hoping Comcast and the Big Ten Network finally … [more]

Lost iTunes Music

hr
hr

Recently I had my backup drive die which doubled as my music drive (dumb). I also in the past few weeks - cleaned out my off site backups which included my music (dumb). After not being very excited with what happened - I decided to do some research on some of my options to get my music back. With my fingers crossed - I submitted a form to Apple asking them if I could get my purchased music back: http://www.apple.com/support/itunes/store/lostmusic/. Let’s hope this works!

Levels of Attire for a Consultant that Works at Home

hr
hr

After working at home for over a year now - my spectrum of “dressing up” has so many new levels - here is my personal dressiness hierarchy:

  1. The bottom: No shower - wearing pajamas
  2. Errands/average day: Shower - warmup pants, or shorts, with flip flops with a t-shirt
  3. More dressed up: Shower - nice shorts, golf shirt, flip flops
  4. Even more dressed up: Shower - nice shorts, golf shirt, sandals
  5. An outing: Shower - jeans, nice golf shirt or t-shirt, sandals
  6. Another outing: Shower - jeans, nice golf shirt, shoes
  7. An occasion: Shower - nice pants, nice golf shirt, shoes
  8. An event: Shower - a suit, heels

Growl 1.1.3 beta 4 + Mac OS X 10.5.3 = Nightmare

hr
hr

I use Growl mostly for email notifications because post the Mac OS X 10.5 update IMAP flag support (new mail notification) blows. Unfortunately x2 GrowlMail (the mail notification which I love and rely on) did not work with 10.5 - so I am forced to rely on having SquirrelMail open so I can see what new mail is where within my many mailboxes. Anyway - I recently saw there was a new(er) beta available for Growl and all was working as expected until I downloaded Mac OS X 10.5.3. After that - I had a … [more]

Undeleting Accidentally Deleted Files

hr
hr

It happens to everyone - and it happened to me last week. I use my MiniStack external 500gig drive for my iTunes music library…and to make room for a complete backup (using Time Machine) I accidentally deleted all my music. Did I have a backup of all my music? No. I recently cleaned up my backup files and deleted the backup that had all my music files.

I have since changed my backups to include music on a regular basis but to get back all the lost music - I used File Salvage. … [more]

Growl Gone Bad

GrowlSome days are better than others. Somedays you do not need to work with other humans to get slapped in the face. Welcome to my day. (For those that do not know what you are looking at - it is a screen full of error notification messages brought to me by Growl)

Chicago: Cold

hr
hr

I know it is generally cold here in the winter - and even though we had a nice break a few days ago, it is cold here, but man I was shocked to see my Mac Mini’s ambient temperature reporting:

So much for that temperature reporting application!

Backup to Amazon S3 With Rsync.

hr
hr

Finally - I stumbled upon an article that outlines how to use rsync, Mac OS X, Jungle Disk, and Amazon S3 (all which I use). This will simplify and speed up my backup process. (Especially when my external backup drive has been acting a little irregular this morning.) If you do not backup your files, or have not looked at Amazon S3 yet - this is your chance!

Always Use a Doctype

hr
hr

After spending an hour on something that should have taken me 20 minutes - I wanted to pass on something I should have caught right away. The problem: you use CSS to lay something out and it looks great in Firefox and Safari - but not in IE. At this point I validate the CSS to make sure I did not forget a bracket or something stupid. Next step - validate the XHTML. This is where I would have solved my problem, but I failed to take this step. At that point I would have … [more]

Back to the Snow

hr
hr

I just returned from a four day trip to FL to visit some family…and to play some golf - both which were enjoyable. I am not much of a warm weather person, but I did enjoy the break from the snow here in Chicago (the most we have seen here in ten years). I am hoping to now get caught up with work. I will note that having my iPhone with me on the trip was extremely key. Not only was I able to keep on top of most of my email, but it entertained Evan on the … [more]

Now That That is Settled…

Well now that Fidel Castro resigned as Cuba’s President (by a letter!) and HD-DVD is dead (yeah for Blu-ray), I think we can all say it was one long awaited day!

Bluetooth Cordless Phone

hr
hr

I was in the market for new cordless phones after being completely disgusted with the Uniden UI and came across something I found pretty interesting: cordless phones that would allow me to make/take calls from my home line and my cell phone. A and I are famous for not hearing my cell phone while at home so this will be perfect.

planeguage.

My company does consulting for Delta Air Lines and while watching the latest “Planeguage” video - I laughed out loud. I happened to have this experience a few years ago on Spirit Air when I happened to be in the very last row. Needless to say the flight experience was horrible and I have since to fly in the back row - or on Spirit Air. If you have not checked out the videos (or the Delta Air Lines blog) check it out: http://blog.delta.com/

internet explorer and custom 404 pages issues in wordpress.

hr
hr

Has anyone else seen the issue where you have created a 404 (or not) for WordPress and when you show links to posts or pages in WordPress that are marked as private - IE users intermittently get the generic IE 404 page? I cannot figure out how to fix this. Any thoughts would be appreciated! The HTTP header that the page (password protected) produces is a 301.

Basically - I have a custom 404 template that says “if is logged in show “file not found” and then a link to the search form. If you … [more]

welcome 2008.

hr
hr

I return to blogging a year older and a little more relaxed now that the holidays are done. I hope everyone enjoyed the holidays and are ready for a great year! I am in the midst of catching up with work, and getting everything back in order. I learned that the holiday time is more stressful and needs better planning now that we have 2 birthdays (me and Evan) and Christmas and New Years all within a little over 2 weeks. I figure by next week I will be ready to get back to posting more. … [more]

wordpress mu spam.

hr
hr

I recently finished up migrating a site for a client (WordPress MU) from one host to another. I got an email requesting the migration from someone that said “it was a simple blog with only a few plugins”. When I took my initial look, I counted 30 plugins, and a database with 2093 tables (WordPress MU standard install uses 7 tables). When I asked them about the database size, they were just as shocked. Come to find out - they had a ton of “spam blogs”. After a few hours of weeding out some … [more]

nine years later…

hr
hr

Nine years later to the month that I proudly graduated from Penn State and I have finally paid off my student loans! This is a big day for me as I thought it would never happen. Now I can put my student loan payment towards’ Evan’s future college fund so he hopefully will not have much to pay when he graduates in 2029.

email overload? here are some tips.

hr
hr

Most people rely on email for their day to day business and personal communication - so much so that your mailboxes are most likely overflowing. Here are a few tips I have practiced over the last few years to keep my email under control.

  1. Make a judgement call with each email message you receive. If it will be beneficial in the future to view, keep it, if not, get rid of it on the spot. You will be amazed at how many message you have like this - and cluttered they make your mailboxes. Toss out the “Thanks”, “Got … [more]

mail.app version 3.1.

hr
hr

I have been using Leopard (Mac OS X 10.5) for multiple weeks now, and I am absolutely fed up with Mail.app (others are as well). I rely heavily on email for all aspects of my business, and I finally had to resort to using webmail today so I would not waste any more time troubleshooting and manually clicking on all my IMAP folders to see if I had new messages in them (something is broken with showing the “Unread” status. On top of that fun, Mail.app hangs multiple times a day, and I noticed today, the mail activity … [more]
