When I think about my average day in front of the computer and the tasks that I do…it is unbelievable how much different it is and it makes me wonder what everything will look like in 5-10 years. Google’s search engine changed it all.
I want to take a moment to thank Dr. McMurry for taking the time with me at Penn State when discussing me switching majors from communications to history. I will alway remember and be thankful for everything I learned from her. I remember asking her what skills she thought a history major could bring to the job market and she went on to talk about how important it was to be able to collect, organize, and process information.
Over the past ten years I have been exposed to a number of technologies…all with different levels of mastery. But overall, I have one skill, above all others, that I have mastered…the ability to collect, organize, and process information. I may not be able to tell you off hand how to create rounded corners in CSS, or to configure your network card with ifconfig, but I can tell you where to go find this information, and the process I would go through to get the job done. My depth comes with finding information to form solutions.
I have never regretted my focus in college, and I would do it again in a heartbeat. What I can tell you…is that in a few years we are going to be surrounded by indexed information, and I look forward to the challenge of making sense of it all with the skill set Dr. McMurry taught me during some of the best years of my life.
